Since lenses had been known and used for fifteen centuries previously, it is strange that not until the prodigious seventeenth century, the century of method and reason, was the marvellous combination of glasses which created the telescope and the microscope discovered. This great invention was not the result of theoretical investigation, for philosophers ans scientists, including Galileo himself, had completely erroneous ideas about the nature of light and its effects.Only experiment led to the invention of his instruments. It was a humble optician of the low countries who made the first microscope. The microscopes were made in silver, bone, ebony, skin of shark, ivory, gilt bronze… and wew carefully preserved. And with luck some microscopes have come to us to our time.
